Q: Christmas Party... (business question..)?
ok. i have been seeing this wonderful guy. for about.. 5 months. i met him through work. he doesnt work in the company i work for.. he works for a company that buys from my company. anywho his company is BIG, ours small. so his company is having a christmas party. We both dont want the people from his job knowing that we are SERIOUSLY dating, because of politics and etc. , but we are still going to gether as a date. ok. so my question is this.. or these.. 1. he wants me to look HOT and i want to look hot too. as a matter of fact i want to be the hottest girl there (it might be hard.. ) SO WHAT SHOULD I WEAR.. TO LOOK GREAT..? BUT NOT TOO SLEAZY CUZ ITS HIS COWORKERS I DONT WANT THEM GETTING A WOODY... 2. THE PEOPLE THERE KNOW THAT I AM FROM THIS COMPANY AND I THINK IT WOULD BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO HELP SELL MORE OF OUR PRODUCT TO THEM. BUT WOULD THE CHRISTMAS PARTY BE A BAD TIME TO GIVE OUT BUSINESS CARDS ETC...? OR SHOULD I KEEP IT STRICTLY PLEASURE..?

A: It's Christmas, so hot can = tight instead of revealing. I generally think women that show cleavage or too much leg within a business setting, even outside of work, are inappropriately dressed. The equivalent of a guy wearing a dress shirt with the collar open to the third button and a gold chain. I would skip the business cards. The last thing I want to deal with at a company Christmas party is a vendor trying to make a sale. Take them with you though - it's appropriate to give one to someone that asks first. Have fun!

Q: Is it legal for my employer to open mail sent to me in care of the business, such as thank you cards, etc. ?
This has been an ongoing debate here. Though it does state in our employee manual that the Employer has the "right" to open our mail, I believe it's intentions were to cover personal mail we may have sent to us at work (which no one here does, that I'm aware of). We will get thank you cards, Christmas and other holiday cards opened up, sometimes a week or more AFTER the postmark. They open our 1099's from one source of our income, and other sensitive material we may receive from some of our suppliers. I'm just curious - is this a common occurance in business, or something more isolated. Regardless, I would like to know if this is legal or not - whether they state in our manual it is their "right" to do so. If it isn't legal, what would be the best way to handle the situation?

A: Yes they can.... why do you have any personal mail delivered to your workplace??? Have it sent to your home....

Q: Friend wants to start pet reptile business what would be a good company name?
His name is Sacha and for Christmas I wanted to surprise him with some business cards, just something to start with, and because neither of us are very witty at thinking of a good name decided I'd get some ideas. Please Help!

A: In order to pass out business cards he will need to be a registered business and once the name is registered it costs money to change the name, so i would wait on the cards, or print up a single card's, each with a different name on it and let him pick one out that way you dont have to worry about it later

Q: Where can I buy/order a good quality business card holder?
This Christmas I'm thinking about getting a card holder for my boyfriend as he's just started his own business. Not the kind you put on your desk, I'm looking for the kind you carry. For a physically small gift I want something high quality and I'd like to get it engraved/embossed. I don't really know where to look for this sort of thing and would appreciate any suggestions.

A: www.thingsremembered.com This is where I go for anything I want engraved.

Q: How can I make my writing into a business/profitable hobby when I am only 16?
Hey, I am almost 16 and I have a knack for poetry, rhyming, as well as just writing in general. I am even into song/parody writing a little and have been writing personalized poems for christmas cards, businesses, etc. for family and friends for years. I was wondering how I could capitalize on these skills and make some money (I am in need of money right now). I have tried writing contests, but they don't seem to pay off. Does anyone know how/where I could start up some sort of business online for selling my writing? Should I set up a Paypal account? Also, if anyone here wants a personalized poem for a christmas card, anniversary, etc. let me know. You can contact me at perry_nunes@yahoo.com to talk, look at examples of my previous work and more. Let me know guys, thanks.

A: See if your library has a copy of Poet's Market 2009 and browse through it to find any opportunities that might work for you. Check this one out, too. If your local library doesn't have it, they can get it for you via inter-library loan. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Freelance-Writing-for-Greeting-Card-Companies/Patrisha-Stauss-M-a/e/9781425926984/?itm=3 This one is for writing slogans, jingles and other things for ads - very lucrative. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Copywriters-Handbook/Robert-W-Bly/e/9780805078046/?itm=3 Find a place where you can set up a free, good-looking website. Link to the e-greeting card companies (see if you can sign up for their affiliate programs, too). People can choose e-greeting cards and write their own messages, so they can buy your writing to put in the cards. Offer some free verses or prose on the website - consider these free samples of your work. I don't know that the money will roll in, but it doesn't cost anything to do this. I really think you'll have more success offline, on paper. Use the books above to get started. Consider teaming up with a greeting card artist to create your own company, too.

Q: Should I include my business cards in the envelopes with the Restaurant Gift Cards?
I am a small business owner who distributes products and my best customer which represents about 50% of my total business asked me for some sort of contribution for their Christmas Party. I plan on getting about 4 gift cards each worth $50 from a decent restaurant. They will randomly give these out to employees at their companies Christmas Party. I plan on giving each of the 4 gift cards in a 4 plain white envelopes. Should I include my business card in each envelope as well along with the gift card? Should I also give a seperate gift to some of the managers who treat me good and continue to trust me and buy lots of products from me? They are really good people. Any help would be appreciated.

A: For your second question first. Yes you should give a separate gift to the people you directly deal with. The thing you need to think about here is that you probably should give them a bigger gift. So if you are giving $50 gift cards for their party, you proabably want to give them a $100 gift card individually. The thing you do not want to do is give a $50 gift card for the party but only give them a $25 card. Even though it is a gift they could be hurt by the fact that you gave them less. For the first part. I would not recommend just a business card. To a lot of people this would seem like you are advertising and the "gift" was not really sincere. But, if you have company Christmas cards, there is nothing wrong with putting the gift card in these. If you don't have company Christmas cards you can get a few regular Christmas cards and just write your company name in the card. Also, the gift cards have a place that says From/To. I don't see anything wrong with you writing your company name in the FROM Section for the 4 that you are giving away.

A: yes, include the card, anyone who gets it would likely want to share the appreciation with some kind of thankyou and it may generate business. And, yes, you should show some other appreciation for your best customers, they will remember it...

Q: What should I write on Christmas card for my brother?
He's 22 years old, but already has lots of good things going on for him. He's got a cool personality and has a career in business. What might be something funny, but not vulgar, to write on his Christmas card?

A: My Christmas wishes fly to you, Like lovely snowflakes from the blue, Spilling gently from my heart, Falling softly through the dark, Until they find your candlelight, Through whispering winds that sing of night. May peace and joy wrap you in, Blankets of love, where hope has been. And may your kind and gentle ways, Be blessed with happy, peaceful days, Becoming more beautiful with every thought, Like every flake the earth has caught. My dear sweet Brother...

A: Putting your business card in would be fine, except that it can easily be thrown away or removed by the gift-givers. You might want to purchase the gift cards and write in the blanks provided: To: ABC Company From: XYZ Company This is what vendors did at my husband's large Christmas Party this past Saturday. That way, you know for sure that your company name gets the credit for the gift!

Q: I want to send a Christmas ecard in Cantonese?
I have a Chinese friend in business in Hong Kong. He has sent me a Christmas Card in English and I would like to send him one in Cantonese - his mother tongue!

A: In the Yahoo! greeting at the bottom of the webpage, you will see "greeting". In it, you can search "chinese new year", and then you may get some e-cards. I have found out one free e-card in Cantonese!

Q: Do you think that business are going to get hit hard this year with Christmas?
Meaning not as much purchasing? Credit cards etc? Do think that business are going to loose a lot of money? I am talking about the recession that we are in.

A: Yep, it's going to happen. The sad part is that during the campaign for president all we heard was that if the democrats had control, we would see utopia. It ain't gonna happen, folks. We're in for double digit jobless numbers, maybe double digit inflation, a stagnant economy, high food prices, and lots of vacant homes. Not to mention, possible waiting in line for gasoline. Can you say " hello Jimmy Carter years"?
