Q: What do I need to know before buying a real Christmas tree?
My (new) husband and I were discussing Christmas traditions this weekend. We want to get a tree for our apartment. It's got to be small to fit in our living room, around 5' tall or so. It will be sitting on carpet near a window that faces to the north (no direct sun). A real tree seems the best, because once we buy a house we'll probably want a bigger one, so why buy an artificial only to throw it out in a year or two? But... neither of us have ever bought a real one before. What items do we need? For instance, do you still need a tree skirt? What kind of stand do we need, and do you get it at the place where you buy the tree? Any other tips we should keep in mind? Thanks!

A: Like others have said, pick out a tree that looks good to you and is the right height. Don't forget that it will be a bit taller when it's in the stand and the star needs to fit on top. If you are going to set it up right when you buy it, have them cut about an inch off the stump so that it will be fresh and able to absorb water, or do that yourself before you bring it inside. And also make sure that there aren't any branches too low on the trunk that will keep the tree from fitting into the stand. Check which branches you cut off before doing it, though, because it can change how your tree looks. When you do bring it in your apartment, wrap it in a sheet and then carry it in so that you don't get needles all over the place. Place a folded garbage bag under the stand and then a towel over that. Put the stand on the tree while it is lying down and then stand it up and make sure that it's straight. Put a tree skirt around if you want to or if you think it looks good. Water the tree daily or as needed (check the water levels daily). To keep the tree healthy, add a half cup of sugar or ginger ale to each pitcher of water that you pour into the stand. Good luck and have fun with it!

Q: Does anyone know how to make the Christmas tree center piece using net tulle and a taper candle?
The net tulle was cut into strips of different widths, gathered and placed around the candle. Starting with the largest at the bottom of the candle and the smallest at the top of the candle forming a tree. A star was placed on the top of the candle, and small bells or ornaments were used to decorate the "tree". The tree was placed in a styrofoam base, with a small tree skirt it became the table centerpiece or decroation. This was very popular in the 1960s and 1970s.

A: Sounds like you answered your own question. Using your own directions, start with a 2" or wider width of tulle for the bottom and use narrower strips as you go up. That should work for the tree. You can attach with hot glue or double-sided tape or even short straight pins. For the base, I would use a styrofoam disk and cut a circle in the center the diameter of the candle base. Then have fun decorating! Good luck! It sounds like a pretty project.

Q: tips on christmas tree decorating. i have several questions on decorating my tree. can you please answer my qu
do you think it is nice if i put a manger under the tree or leave it empty? can i put clear lights and color light or will the color light not show? whats nicer clear or color? does the tree skirt have to match the scheme? i tree has gold ornaments and gold ribbon. does it have to have a gold skirt? or can i just use my red one i have?

A: I really like eclectic trees, and I think a tree is *much* nicer if it has some personal meaning. Ornaments that you or your kids have done, maybe a special ornment you buy each year, or photo ornaments. Everything "goes" because everything is Christmas. However, if you are decorating for a shop, then go for white lights, and splurge for the gold skirt. Or better yet, buy red ornaments. Too much stuff on a store tree looks tacky, and gets knocked down too easily. Simple and elegant is best. RE: Manger question. It's OK under the tree until you start getting presents -- then the manger can get buried. If it's a personal tree, maybe the kids want to be playing with the manger (which I think is great) so it's best to put it a little beside the tree. If for a store, manger under the tree sounds good (until the first customer complaint), maybe with some fake presents wrapped up.

Q: Does your cat think that you bring a Christmas tree into the house just for him/her?
My cat really appreciates the effort I take to bring the outside in, just for him! The tree skirt always has a fine protective coating of white fur!

A: Oh my god, yes. http://www.fluffytails.ca/christmas.asp

Q: Christmas tree plug melt down - please help!?
I am very worried because of this situation. My husband noticed our Christmas tree lights went out. Upon further investigation he found the plug where all the light go into melted down and a small burn in our tree skirt. I feel lucky that our house didn't burn down and worried to set the tree up next year. It's an artificial tree and it's very tall. I have an extension cord with three outlets that runs up it. I'd appreciate any advice, suggestions, thoughts, etc. Thanks!

A: There is a limit to how much electricity a wire can carry. DON'T plug all of your lights into the same socket! If this is a light weight extension cord, it probably couldn't handle the electrical current that you were putting through it. YES, you were very lucky. You can buy a "heavy-duty" extension cord, 16 or 18 gauge, that can handle the heavier load. Also, try using more than one extension cord and running them to different sockets on the wall. Please have a safe holiday!

Q: My dog is drinking the water out of the christmas tree...Suggestions?
I bought a tree skirt and now he just pulls that off! What can i do? The water dish is only about 6 feet away from the tree....And we cant constantly keep it filled because if we leave it filled he drinks it all and then pees all over the house (hes only a puppy). And for the tape and aluminum foil or plastic wrap: ive already tried! And no he's NOT thristy! If you only knew how much he drinks unless you take it away.

A: It's ok for the dog to drink the water out of the Christmas tree. It won't hurt him, and it's just a carry over instinct from the days when dogs were pack animals. Just keep filling up the tree everyday. My cats have done the same thing for years.

Q: A question for hard core Christmas Tree decorators--Please Help!?
I have an artificial tree and I have decorated it with lots of lights plugged into an extension cord. Now I just got a tree skirt and have never used one before. It covers the tree stand well, but I was wondering if I could hide the light plugs under it as well. I have run the wires underneath but not the plugs themselves. So, I don't want to create a fire hazard. Is it okay to put the plugs under the velvet tree skirt? Thanks, and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. Peace.

A: It will be fine to do that, I do it every year. Sometimes I use my white tree skirt, and put blinking lights under it so they show through. Merry Christmas!

Q: Does anybody know where I can find a pattern to make a Christmas treet skirt?
I am 23 and trying to learn how to sew, my first project was a blanket for my daughter. That was pretty simple. My next project is a tree skirt, I was going to have my aunt help because she knew how to sew very well until she died very recently. Now I am stuck I do not have a pattern or anything. I do not know where to begin. I already have my fabric it is just a thin cotton fabric and I got a felt backing for it (the lady at wal-mart helped me) I just do not know how to cut it or how do make it. Please help.

A: Well, it's really just a big circle. You can make a pattern yourself with leftover newspaper. Think of it as a big pie cut into pieces. It all depends on the size of your Christmas tree, but it is so easy to make that you really don't even need a pattern. Remember, a big circle, with pieces like a pie. Sew the top and bottom separate, then sew them together inside out. Leave a little hole to turn it outside-in and sew the little hole up and you're done! Hope I helped! Good Luck!!!

Q: My christmas tree stand has an odor coming from it...and i dont know why?
Plus i have mysterious wet spots showing up on my carpet outside the tree skirt area and they are stand alone spots with no water source leading to them like someone just spliied something! Weird...anyone know why these things are happening..?

A: Could be a crack or a leak..put a kitchen towel under the tree skirt and spray some febreeze - if it continues you may need another tree.

Q: crochet ?- bby blnkt wth wave pttn. #of stchs incrs wth each rw. Is ths ok? wll I end up wth a tree skirt?
the pattern is 102 sgl cr. then the pattern is 5 dbl crochets, then 2 dbl crochets in the next two stches, then 5 dbl crochets, and a dc2tog (a single stitch) in the next two stches. I repeat the pattern until the end of row and then turn, but the # of stitches is growing and I can't figure out if it is normal or if I will end up with a nice thing to throw around the Christmas tree. It is looking wavy. If anyone has a good pattern to follow that would be appreciated. My friends baby is due in Jan so I have time.

A: This will make your item curved. At first, you are doing 5 double crochets. Then you do 2 double crochets in each of the next two stitches (this is the top of your chevron-pattern name). Going down the other side of your chevron-or zig zag, as some people like to call the pattern-it only says for you to decrease two together into a single stitch. This should be done twice in order to keep your blanket flat. So, here's how your pattern SHOULD read-providing that the beginning stitches are right... Do 5 double crochets, 2 double crochets in each of the next two stitches, 5 more double crochets, (decrease over the next two stitches) twice ***instead of doing a decrease over the next two stitches twice, some patterns will simply say to skip the next two stitches and then start your pattern over by starting at the first 5 double crochets.*** The important thing to remember is that the number of stitches that you increase (at the top of the chevron-or zig zag) is how many stitches that you need to decrease (get rid of) at the bottom of your chevron to make the blanket lie flat and straight. Otherwise, you will have an item that curves. I personally prefer to use the way done between the ***'s. If you'd like, you can email me privately and I'll be happy to send you a pattern that's much easier to understand and turns out great. In fact, this was the first afghan that I crocheted, when I was around 10 or 12 years old.

Q: Christmas Tree Decorations?
So this summer i got my bedroom re-done. Green carpet, purple walls, green/purple/blue bed set. All green/purple/blue. And, every year I have a christmas tree in my room. In Previous years it was just like, ugly and non-themed. This year I am doing it to match my bedroom. I am getting a white tree, pre-lit, 4ft tree. Here are the decorations I have so far. -6 silver disco-ball bulbs -5 glittery teal/blue bulbs - a mix a small silver/green/blue bulbs -18 long, skinny green/purple ornaments -3 glittery bulbs with rhinestones -1 green glittery star thing -ornaments,like words that say "peace" and ones that say "joy" -4 blue diamond things what else could I use? Any ideas for a tree skirt?

A: On a 4 foot tree that should pretty well cover it, maybe get some of the miniature lights if its a prelit fiber optics tree. As far as a tree skirt you can get decent looking ones at Wal-Mart for under $20.

Q: Another cat and Christmas tree dilemma.?
I have 3 cats and at first all they did was lay under the tree, now they like to steal and break the ornaments. There aren't any ornaments at the bottom so I have no idea how they are getting them. We have a water bottle but they just return to the scene after they have licked the water off. Oh I have tried foil and things that make noise...that does not work. Bitter apple does not work and the clawing spray does not work. (the like to use the tree skirt as a scratchings sheet)

A: I can't believe the advice you're getting. A Christmas tree is up for a few weeks at most but your cats are part of the family and will be with you for a long time. I used to stress about my tree until I realized I was ruining Christmas by fighting with the cats over the tree. I just get a cheap tree now and string on safe ornaments. I swipe the cords with some lemon juice, tie the tree to the ceiling, and enjoy the antics. Aside from putting the tree in a closed off area, that's about all you can do. I spent a fortune on sprays and repellents that didn't work. Loosen up and be glad you have a home to put a tree in and family to share it with (including your cats). Merry Christmas.
